The Sennheiser HD 4.40 BT headphones have been a long time coming. Finally, the cost of entry into good, solid wireless Bluetooth performance is getting within reach of most music lovers. Hooray!
With top-notch build quality as usual from this superb headphone maker plus a pleasantly smooth musical presentation, the HD4.40 BT is a fresh design from the ground up. Similar in form factor to the recently released - and truly terrific - 'HD4' model series, the Sennheiser HD 4.40BT is a well-priced, lightweight, mid/full-sized Bluetooth headphone suitable for any listener seeking the ease of wire-free music and full call/voice compatibility with most phones, laptops or tablets.
Sennheiser has engineered new proprietary drivers for the HD 4.40BT that are specially tuned to deliver that classically detailed, laid-back tonality that has made Sennheiser leaders in the audiophile field. Given the durable minimalist construction, travel-friendly features and comfortable ergonomics of this portable-ready design, our Headphone.com review team thinks we may have crowned a new champion of affordable Bluetooth headphones.
In particular, the midrange voice regions retain good presence and body, so both music vocals and incoming phone calls sound comprehensible. The bass response is decently punchy but it doesn't overly boom out and get in the way of other critical frequencies. The upper highs are slightly veiled - again, almost a classic Sennheiser trait - but they still exhibit acceptable detail with a brilliance that avoids stridency.
As to be expected at this price point and category, dynamics are a bit lacking with a slightly flat depth of field typical for Bluetooth sound. The soundstage is also somewhat closed-in feeling - again, basically something to be expected in light of the sealed-back earcup construction and relatively compressed resolution power.
The all-black Sennheiser HD 4.40 BT headphones have round closed-type earcups with a collapsible folding headband and super-plush cushions that will rest gently on the outer part of the earlobes on most wearers. Isolation is respectable and will effectively prevent audio 'leakage' from the headphones while insulating the listener from moderate ambient environmental noise.
The slim-profile, tough-built headband securely adjusts up and down for different head sizes. All headphone volume/ music track/call controls are located on the right earcup along with a tiny recessed USB port for charging purposes. Charge time from empty to full status is under two hours. The battery run time is rated at a long 25 hours.
The 2-year manufacturer's 'repair or replace' warranty stays free with your Sennheiser authorized dealer purchase receipt - like the one you'll get from us here at Headphone.com since 1995!
