A true 'cult classic' favorite headphone if there ever was one, we ranked the Sennheiser HD600 amongst the world's top audiophile cans when we first heard it way back in the day.
Nowadays, other flagship headphones reign as king of the hill, and the Sennheiser HD650, AKG K712, HiFiMAN HE400 and the Beyerdynamic DT1990 could be considered rival headphones for certain tastes. But at a lower price than the HD650 (or the kingly HD800S!) and still delivering impressive world-class audio performance, the HD600 remains a very awesome headphone indeed.
At 300 Ohm impedance, the HD600 is maybe a bit more headphone than warranted if only using it with a tablet or smartphones. And for spendy listeners who are die-hard audiophiles and demand the top headphones for superior 'high-end' systems, the uber-expensive but worth-every-penny Sennheiser HD800S provides significant musical improvements in ways critical for demanding reference applications.
But if you've got basic high-quality audio sources and/or a 'starter' audiophile rig and a good headphone amp, the HD600 effortlessly delivers satisfying musical reproduction with fast dynamic extension, smooth detail resolution and a well-layered soundstage image, along with superb 'bang-for-the-buck' headphone value.
The HD600 signature sound leans towards a full but very responsive low bass balanced by well-focused mids and cleanly rendered but slightly 'laid-back' uppermost highs; It's not quite as deeply resolved and buttery-sounding as the HD650, but with a bit more energetic punch compared to its upscale sophisticated big brother, the HD-600 is a marvelous headphone for modern jazz, symphonic LPs or well-produced rock music. Naturally, at a very stiff 300 Ohm impedance, a headphone amp is recommended for maximized detail resolution and a fully transparent sound.
Featuring similar ergonomics as the Sennheiser HD650 model, the HD600 has velour earpads and headband cushions and employs a carbon fiber construction with sturdy metal open-mesh earcup grilles. The hearty build quality eliminates spurious mechanical vibrations within the headphone frame thus delivering a clear, articulate mid-range and treble response sans harsh acoustic reflections. The unique dynamic drivers in the HD600 are precisely matched to exacting tolerances at the Sennheiser factory in Germany to ensure a perfectly balanced audio image.
As a plus, the HD600 has a detachable cable measuring [approx] 9.5ft long in a 'Y'-cord type. The cable can be replaced with upgraded aftermarket headphone cords offering improved audio clarity, especially if using the HD600 with uncompressed music sources. This makes it easy to upgrade to Corpse Cable or Cardas headphone cords. A free 2-year manufacturer's warranty remains in place when proof-purchased at authorized Sennheiser dealers - like us here at Headphone.com since 1995!
