Occupying a choice spot in the high-end sealed headphone panoply, the Audio Technica ATH-W1000X Grandioso are lovely audiophile-oriented cans with precise musical detail and that deep sense of instrumental soundstage space we've come to expect from top AT designs. These large circumaural headphones have a richly present bass that is expertly balanced with clear vocal mids and detailed highs without audible edginess. A weakness of some less expensive Audio Technica models is perhaps a lack of musical body and acoustic fullness, but these issues are not heard in the ATH-W1000X. There does, however, exist a hint of resonance in the upper bass and low mids bringing a vague honkiness to certain recordings, most noticeably with tracks that are dense with low frequencies and can be prone to muddiness; some extensive ‘burn-in’ time may help clarify that nit-pick. Nevertheless, the ATH-W1000X maintain an engrossing level of definition and musical separation, even if slightly lacking an organically "natural" tone — frankly, always a difficult feat for any sealed-back headphone. The beauteous ATH-W1000X housings are cut from real Black Cherry virgin wood often used in piano construction for distinct sound and graceful looks.

The Audio Technica ATH-W1000X circumaural full-size earcups contain large 53mm aperture drivers featuring specially built, proprietary 2-part magnetic circuits that produce extremely high speed magnetic streams for significantly improved sound quality and quick-response dynamic extension. Traditional Audio-Technica '3-D' wing supports on the headband are well-suited for larger noggins. The ATH-W1000X's headphone cord extends about 9.5ft and terminates to a high-quality 1/4" [6.3 mm] gold-plated stereo plug; cord braid is a high elastic Elastomer sheathing and PC-OCC conductor cabling. Very nifty wood inlay on 1/4" plug adds yet another highly distinctive cosmetic touch.

Holy calamity!

Pros: Almost Everything
Cons: Expensive, ostentatious

This is a big, loud, warm, vast headphone that's quite comfortable and looks like a million dollars. Within 30 seconds I knew my Grado RS-2s were toast.

I never thought I'd get off the Grado sound, but these days I prefer audio-technica. The sumptuous earpad. The high efficiency drivers. The big bass! It's most of what I like from the Grados, only heightened and finished with a broad stage and the accuracy and isolation necessary to pick out details on that stage. Listening to some well recorded orchestral work, I could hear when the cellist moved his bow. Suitably impressed.

I don't much care for how my vinyl sounds with these -- too heavy in the low end, but then that system was designed around an open air headphone. They sound great with my simple DAC, with the iPad and with my CD player.

No 1/4-to-mini adapter is included and that's a bit annoying -- a highly efficient 42 ohm headphone will be used with modern equipment, which isn't going to be mini. The super sexy 1/4 plug is going to spend most of its life sullied by fugly adapters.
