For years we anxiously awaited THE great thousand dollar sealed-back headphone. Quite a few appeared: some were beautiful, but basically make-overs of other cans; some had only very narrow listener appeal; some were very difficult to power correctly; and most were simply before their time and now discontinued. But in nearly every case we were disappointed for one reason or another and we've been impatiently pining for the first truly impressive entry into this demanding 'grand' category. Well, we wait no more! We're very pleased to tell you that the DENON AH-D7000 is one of the best sealed-back [closed earcup] headphones to competently and legitimately inhabit this rarefied air of "Grand $1,000+ Headphones."
The musical performance of these headphones goes well beyond excellent audio measurements (check our proprietary HeadRoom audio lab 'Specs' tab above). Like any extremely fine piece of high-end audiophile gear, they have a luxurious and subjectively appealing sound that simply draws in the listener, compelling one to listen to track after track of old favorite music for hours on end discovering new, previously obscured details. While the midrange presentation is liquid and coherent, and the highs very well-extended and smoothly articulate, the truly astonishing characteristic of these cans remains the lowest octaves. These headphones simply have the best, most texturally accurate low-bass extension of any cans we've heard to date. Square wave lab measurement bears out the fact that the AH-D7000 remain responsive a full octave lower than any other sealed reference headphone we've measured in our HeadRoom audio facilities. But don't mistake what we're saying here: the D7000 is not boomy, dark, woolly, murky, nor any other adjective used for flawed bottom-end response. When properly driven, expect tight, punchy accuracy all the way into the sub-basement foundation allowing you to finally hear the bassoons, violas, tympani and percussion come fully alive in your favorite classical recordings; demanding pipe organ music never sounded so right as in these terrific headphones and upright bass lovers are in for a marvelous acoustic experience!
The high-end sumptousness doesn't stop with the sound quality: glove-soft deep leather earpads and headband cover are pliant and extra-comfortable; magnesium headband parts are light, tight, and stylish; deep gloss-lacquered mahogany wood earpieces are a warm natural color; and the headphones are connected with a fabric covered, high-purity oxygen-free 10ft copper cable terminated in a beefy gold plated 1/4" headphone plug. We recommend allowing a minimum of 200~300hrs of 'burn-in' play-time for the D7000 headphones to sound their very best. No mini-plug 3.5mm adapter is included (we suggest the Cardas Audio 1/4"-to 1/8" adapter if plugging into small 3.5mm iPod/iPad/PC outputs). The AH-D7000 offers headband sizing in seven-step adjustments so most should be able to get a proper fit with these full-size circumaural cans. A nice plus is the DENON logo is embedded under the shiny lacquer so over-handling won't wear away the graphic; D5000 owners will likely be appreciative. Nevertheless, please remember to be deliberate handling the D7000 as that sweet high-gloss piano finish can be surface-nicked if not careful. The AH-D7000 arrive in an appropriately lavish heavy-duty shipping/storage wood box outfitted in leather & lined with silk so your cans have a safe, opulent place to stow away when they're not on your head. Also found in the box is a soft DENON cleaning cloth to ensure your new headphones stay as slick as the day you bought 'em. By the way, the mahogany wood used in the construction of the D7000 is not an endangered species as verified by CITES enviromental organization, so thanks DENON! The USA 1-year manufacturer's warranty is serviced solely through DENON-USA located in Mahwah, New Jersey.

Pros: Articulate highs, Resounding bass, lively, musical sound
Cons: Relatively poor isolation, cable is a but fussy, Build is nice, but not $1000 nice
Their D5000 sibling tends to boomy, almost flabby bass - the reason I traded up.
The D7000 treble is a bit brighter and more detailed than the D5000, and for me, hits "perfect" right on the head. Sparkle, detail and realism, without being brittle or inducing any sibilance of its own.
The D7000 mids are the weak link in that they are slightly recessed. They are tonally accurate, but not quite as present as I would like. Note that this is a pretty subtle criticism, and not a deal breaker for me.
The bass is sublime, tonally accurate, dynamic, wonderful. There is probably a bit more bass than is technically "accurate."
These are the most comfortable headphone I have worn.
I love them, and highly recommend them as my favorite closed headphone.
