For years we anxiously awaited THE great thousand dollar sealed-back headphone. Quite a few appeared: some were beautiful, but basically make-overs of other cans; some had only very narrow listener appeal; some were very difficult to power correctly; and most were simply before their time and now discontinued. But in nearly every case we were disappointed for one reason or another, and we've been impatiently pining for the first truly impressive entry into this demanding 'grand' category. Well, we wait no more! We are very pleased to tell you that the DENON AH-D7000 is the first sealed-back (closed earcup) headphone to competently and legitimately inhabit the rarefied air of "Grand $1,000+ Headphones."
The musical performance of these headphones goes well beyond excellent audio measurements. Like any extremely fine piece of high-end audiophile gear, they have a luxuriant and subjectively appealing sound that simply draws in the listener, compelling you to listen to track after track of favorite music for hours on end as you discover new, previously-obscured details. While the midrange presentation is liquid and coherent, and the highs very well-extended and smoothly articulate, the truly astonishing characteristic of these cans remains the lowest octaves. These headphones simply have the best, most texturally accurate low-bass extension of any cans we've heard to date. Lab measurement bears out the fact that the AH-D7000 remain responsive a full octave lower than any other sealed reference headphone we've measured in our HeadRoom audio facilities. However, don't mistake what we're saying here: the D7000 is not boomy, dark, woolly, murky, nor any other adjective used for flawed bottom-end response. When properly driven, expect tight, punchy accuracy all the way into the sub-basement foundation allowing you to finally hear the bassoons, violas, tympani and percussion come fully alive in your favorite classical recordings; demanding pipe organ music never sounded so right as in these terrific headphones!
The high-end luxury doesn't stop with the sound quality either: glove-soft deep pleather earpads and headband cover are pliant and comfy; magnesium hard parts are light, tight, and stylish; deeply gloss-lacquered mahogany wood earpieces are a warm natural color; and the headphones are connected with a fabric covered, high-purity, oxygen-free 10ft copper cable terminated in a gold plated 1/4" headphone plug. We recommend allowing a minimum of 125-150hrs of 'burn-in' play time for the D7000 headphones to sound their very best. No mini-plug 3.5mm adapter is included (we recommend the Cardas Audio 1/4"-to 1/8" adapter if plugging into a source with small 3.5mm outputs). The AH-D7000 offers headband sizing with seven-step adjustment so most wearers should be able to get a proper fit with these full-size circumaural cans. One nice plus is the DENON D7000 logo is embedded under the shiny lacquer so over-handling won't wear away the earcup graphic; D5000 owners will likely be appreciative. However, please remember to be extremely deliberate setting the D7000 headphones down since their stunning high-gloss finish can be easily surface-nicked if not careful. The AH-D7000 arrive in an appropriately lavish heavy-duty shipping/storage box outfitted in leather & lined with silk so your cans have a safe and opulent place to stow away when they're not on your head. Also found in the box is a soft DENON cleaning cloth to make sure your beloved headphones stay as slick-looking as the day you bought 'em. By the way, the mahogany wood used in the construction of the D7000 is not an endangered species as verified by CITES enviromental organization... Pros: Sound and Comfort
Cons: start feeling the weight after 4-5 hours of listening
Most importantly, the Denon sound GREAT both with a Luxman amp and directly connected to a Hifiman HF-801.
I could see how someone listening exclusively to classical music would prefer the Sennheiser HD800 but for anyone else, the Denon are the way to go. In another review, someone commented these are not good for Techno!!! I beg your pardon? The Denon are stunning for electronic music in general. Techno, Transe, Drum and Bass and any other style with substantial bass sound FABULOUS with the Denon (granted they are fed with quality recording format, a quality source and a quality amp.
I might consider having the stock cable replaced with detachable balanced at some point but for now, I am already enjoying them like no other headphones : )
I rated 4 stars for durability because they look solid but I've had them for two months...

Pros: Punchy bass, decent overall transparency
Cons: Mids a little recessed perhaps
The Denons have great , tuneful bass just like everyone says. Good bass, yes, but they don't overwhelm. It's bass emphasis- not OVEREMPHASIS. The rest of the spectrum is clean, transparent and musical, so when you are listening to the slam factor these offer, you also get to enjoy good detail in the rest of the spectrum too. The highs get a bit silkier the more you use them.
They are comfy, though I prefer phones with a velour earpad. The have those luxury build touches like the fantastic finish on the wood and magnesium alloy frames, which are nice, but it's the sound that makes me grin when I put them on.
They are pretty easy to drive and not as picky regarding amps as some high-zoot headphones are.
