NEW! The DENON AH-D7100 is the top-performing sealed audiophile headphone from the masters of Japanese high-end audio. The musical presentation expands upon the superb legacy of the world-famous [now discontinued] AH-D7000 model and features a controlled bottom-end without quite the sub-stratic richness of its forebearer. Totally redesigned ergonomics make this can suitable mainly for larger noggins; smaller heads may feel swallowed by the oversize fit. As long as your melon is rightly sized, the D7100 circumaural earcups rest comfortably on a unique gimbal system providing a great wearing experience. Detachable 'Y-type' headphone cables; the AH-D7100 also includes an iPhone-ready cord with microphone + 3-button Apple device remote controller.

Applications:

The DENON AH-D7100 is perched near the price apex for sealed headphones and its audiophile performance places it in proximity to the same rarified terrain as the Ultrasone Signature Pro, Edition 8, and Fostex TH-900 headphones. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the AH-D7100 is the complete make-over DENON engineers have devised for all their newest headphones featuring totally new fit designs and ergonomics. The AH-D7100 headphone looks slightly more slim-profile versus its forerunner, the discontinued AH-D7000, but that may be something of a mirage. Once you actually wear these cans, its quickly obvious the D7100 is best for big-headed [read: male] wearers desiring a loose, comfortable fit on their oversize noggin. Most females and smaller heads will likely be swallowed by the gargantuan dimensions, leaving the full-size earcups hanging down around the upper neck -- a location where ears are rarely found on humanoids. Sonically, the DENON AH-D7100 hews fairly close to its highly lauded precursor but with a tad less extended bottom-end response and audibly narrower soundstage imaging. Midranges seem decently pronounced and slightly more forward than in the D7000 with an energetic tone that works well with certain vocals but not so well with others depending largely on the recording caliber and timbre of the voice. Perhaps the biggest weak spot our reviewers heard is the muted sense of "air" and sparkle of the upper treble ranges, which lack easy openness and full resolution, at least to our jaded HeadRoom ears. As a modern plus, after-market DENON apps available via Apple store download provides customized EQ settings tailored specifically for the AH-D7100, along with optional 'remote' iPhone play-back features -- which may allow this headphone to sonically open up significantly with judicious use of the virtual EQ. The easily detachable 'Y-type' headphone cable appears well-constructed with a light 'click' contact into the bottom of each earcup. And, although we're not quite sure how many folks will actually use a $1,200 high-end headphone portably with their smartphone, an iPhone-ready mic'd headphone cable with a built-in 3-button Apple remote control comes provided in the DENON package.

After some loud debates at the office (often carrying on to the local pub), we have come to appreciate the new aesthetic look of the DENON AH-D7100 which is clearly geared to appeal to 'classic design' audiophiles intent on classy cans that deliver serious acoustic goods; the leather brown-on-brushed metal cosmetics is certainly sumptous to the eye. The earpads are padded with very high-quality cushions fabricated from an extra-soft protein leather hybrid material delivering supreme wearing comfort and long-lasting pad durability. The AH-D7100 headband construction is fairly lightweight for a full-size, circumaural sealed-back headphone and the new build ergonomics places the earpieces in a naturally angled position against the ears -- provided you own the right-sized head -- with full coverage of the outer earlobes. Isolation factor seems mildly improved [by a dB or two] compared to the old D7000 model; however, these are still largely home/office-oriented headphones and will not totally shut out the loud din of daily train, bus or subway commutes. The two headphone cords provided (1 standard cable; 1 mic'd iPhone cable] each measure about 9ft in total length. A skinny DENON metal headphone stand is included as is a soft storage/transit pouch. Free 1-year DENON manufacturer's warranty remains serviceable for USA-based customers only with your HeadRoom purchase receipt in DENON's Mahwah, New Jersey facility.

AWESOME!!!

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Extremely comfortable, Very High end
Cons: ? fit for smaller craniums?

As a long time AKG user ( as in AKG,original 240 studio monitors, vintage 1973)I was prepared to replace them with AKG 702's due to better sound and comfort.
Then I heard the Denon's. I can't compare the 7100's with the original 7000's as I never heard the originals, but after hearing the Denon's I was hooked. Extremely comfortable to wear ( according to hat size I am a male medium) and fantastic detail, well balanced, neither top or bottom heavy, very articulate. Completely outclasses the best of the AKG's.
Very high end product, comes in a psuedo silk lined presentation case with a very nice desk top stand, two cords, one a 9 ft Kevlar reinforced replaceable cord and an iPhone compatible cord with built in microphone and controls, as well as a fabric carrying case.
Are they as good as HiFiman HF 500 or 6's ? I can't say having never heard those, but for the 750.00 dollars I paid for these I suspect that IF I have a problem it will be much easier to deal with Denon through HiFiMan.
For roughly twice the cost of the AKG 702's I had originally planned on purchasing, they are easily 4 times the quality/value. They seem very well built and will probably last longer than my original 39 year old AKG's!
