Sennheiser HD 229 Black
The Sennheiser HD 229 is an on-ear headphone designed for portable listening and offers a bit of refreshing style from the German headphone stalwarts. As always, the Sennheiser build quality and ergonomics are second to none with an extremely lightweight -- and light-on-the-ears -- fit that manages to stay secure without undue clamping pressure on the head. The black earpieces are offset by burgundy red headband yokes and earcup flashing that brings the HD229 nicely into the modern age. Delivering peachy bass for such a small can, folks jamming MACs, laptops, iPod/iPad, or mp3 devices will enjoy robust low-end kick with no amp needed.

The biggest calling card of the Sennheiser HD229 Black is the extremely light on-the-ears feel of these small headphones which may be just the ticket for folks who don't typically like wearing large, bulky headphones. So office listeners, dorm denizens or casual portable users not intent on getting heavy-clamping, heavy-isolating headphones should find the HD229 ergonomics ideal. Sound quality is respectable and offers smooth clarity direct from iPod, iPad or mp3 players with no amp needed. The sealed-back earcup design offers mild ambient noise insulation along with a modicum of "leakage" protection, so folks next to you won't stink-eye your tunes being broadcasted about the room. As indicated, the HD229 earpads are small and don't fully cover the earlobes, so extra-loud jammers in quiet spaces may still suffer the wrath of librarians or cubicle mates. Although touted as offering a significant low bass kick, we found the musical presentation fairly well-balanced and neatly detailed, although placing the HD229 small-diameter earpads corrrectly aligned with the ears can make or break the sound on many heads. We suggest experimenting with the on-ear fit to ensure you're getting the best possible tone.
The construction of the HD229 Black appears very solid but simple with basic slide adjusments for headband sizing. Earpad and headband cushions are equally simple with durable pleather-type fabric coverings but are quite plushly-padded given the small size. Although the headphone earcups will not collapse or fully fold down, they do rotate 180 degrees for laying down flat or for easy wearing around the neck when not jamming. The color flash on the headband yokes adds some welcome brightness to the otherwise unassuming design; for folks experiencing computer screen resolution issues, we found the HD229 Black headband color to be a burgundy brick red (not pink-ish as it may look on some monitors!). The short 4.5ft headphone cord facilitates tangle-free mobile listening. The free Sennheiser manufacturer's warranty stands behind the product for a full 2 years from date of purchase with your HeadRoom '100% authorized dealer' receipt.

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Lightweight! Affordable!
Cons: Very little ambient noise reduction, short cord
Sound quality is nice enough for computer or portable listening. Nice enough that I'll deal with the cord length and listen.
