Portable music geeks have stumped for excellent "reference" earbuds that can match the sound quality of audiophile in-ear or big over-ear headphone designs. Chinese audio manufacturer YUIN rises to the challenge with the YUIN PK1, a set of unassuming earbuds that come shockingly close to top in-ear monitors [IEMs] but without the deep ear insertion and poor comfort issues of most IEMs. For listeners with sensitive ears, small ear canals or just for those who don't want to hassle with the fastidious and precise process of properly fitting in-ear headphones, the YUIN PK1 buds come as a sonic revelation. The most impressive thing is how clearly textured and musically detailed the PK1 sound once you have a headphone amp overcoming their rather demanding sensitivity and impedance ratings (for great earbuds that don't require an amp, check the low-impedance YUIN PK2 model). But for headphone amp users, the PK1's transparent treble range extension and tightly focused low-end punch is light-years ahead of any other buds we've heard -- as the PK1 upscale price indicates. Naturally, listeners should not expect much noise-blocking compared to deep in-ears, but if superb sound quality without total isolation is your goal, the YUIN PK1 will put a gigantically pleased ear-to-ear smile on your great-sounding head.
The YUIN PK1 come with a selection of thin foam mesh earpads for adjusting the earpiece fit. A couple of pairs have the 'hole-in-the-middle' style and one pair without the hole. The PK1 has a quality 5-ft 'Y'-cable with even-sided cord lengths going to each ear. YUIN earbuds are available only with matte-black cord and earpieces. A basic wood-paneled little gift box contains the PK1 and all accessories like a gold-plated 1/4" full-size stereo plug adaptor. The PK1's 20-24,000Hz measured audio response matches that of many high-quality in-ear headphone designs. The YUIN 1-year product warranty is serviced exclusively through the manufacturer's Head-Direct/USA offices [customerservice@head-direct.com] located in New York, USA. One more thing: the YUIN booklet and instructions are written in Chinese, so good luck with that.

Then I found the PK1s. Every review said that they sounded great. Every experience I'd had with earbuds has been pretty unimpressive. No highs, noisy/buzzy bass or just plain cheap construction.
The only aural trouble with the PK1s is that they want POWER. At 150 ohms they require some muscle to drive them. When you do these just sing. These are my pocket 'phones and I even carry a pocket amp just to ensure that any source can drive them.
The only design cons are that they aren't stylish and can slip rather easily from the ear but the rest of the build quality can't be faulted. The kit they come with (box, case, extra pads, and so on) is the representation of the effort they put into the headphones themselves. It is not to distract you from bad phones, it is to respect just how good they really are.
