Frequency Response for the Yuin PK2

Ever had your inner ear tickled by in-ear headphones? Well, Chinese audio manufacturer Yuin's excellent earbuds have arrived to rescue iPod/MP3 and laptop/PC listeners tired of the typically invasive in-ear headphone or in-ear monitor fit style. Expect extremely impressive sound quality previously unequaled in the earbud category at anywhere near this price. Thankfully, the easy-to-wear, less fastidious fit of normal earbuds remains intact but unlike other buds on the market, the sound quality here is just completely head & shoulders above most we've heard -- and about equal to many higher priced in-ear monitors [IEMs]. The PK-2's cleanly presented treble range extension and solidly balanced bass response will easily outshine the cheapo buds found in the box with your player device, at big box stores, or even at the Apple shop. Of course, don't expect too much ambient noise-blocking when compared to deeper-fitting true IEMs but if great sound -- not great isolation -- is your goal, these will put a gigantically pleased smile on your nice n' comfy head.

The Yuin PK2 come with a selection of thin foam mesh earpads: 2 pairs with the hole-in-the middle style and one pair without the hole. The PK-2 features a 4ft long 'Y' type cable. As with the other Yuin earbuds, the PK-2 comes only in a black matte color. A grey wood-paneled little gift box contains the PK-2 and all assorted goodies like a gold-plated 1/4" plug adaptor and extra mini earpads. The PK-2's measured 20-20,000Hz audio response matches that of nearly all earphone designs except for upscale ultra high-end earphones. The YUIN 90-day manufacturer's product warranty is serviced exclusively through Head-Direct USA located in New York. And one more thing: the PK2's booklet manual and instructions are mostly in Chinese ... so good luck with that.

I like them a lot
Posted by Brutus B. from Washington DC on 2010-07-22

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: sound quality, comfortable
Cons: bass, durability

I picked these up to replace the stock Apple earbuds for my iPod. I'm no audiophile, but I like my music to sound good. I'd never heard of Yuin, but based on the product review here I pulled the trigger.

I have not been disappointed. I've have them for 8 months and have really enjoyed them. The bass does not boom, but I think there is enough bass not to detract from the texture of the music. The sound is bright and full, and you can really hear the crappyness of the stock Apple's once you hear these.

My main beef with these is construction quaility. Recently the left ear quit working unless I twisted the plug just right. This was no good for on the go listening. I had my brother-in-law solder on a new Radioshack plug, but it's still a little touchy. For 80 bucks I would have hoped the plug would have lasted longer.

Very well-balanced sound

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: sufficient bass, clear and detailed treble, comfortable
Cons: little noise isolation

These replaced the earbuds that Apple supplied with my ipod touch 3G. By comparison, they have tighter bass, MUCH less distorted midrange, and smooth highs. If you want noise isolation for your portable player, buy an in-ear monitor; otherwise, these provide excellent reproduction.

I tried Etymotic ER4p before buying these, but their fit was extremely uncomfortable. The Yuins are the same size and shape as the Apple earbuds, so they will fit the same way. They come with a little round canister for easy storage and transport.

The Yuins come with thin, soft foam "donuts" that you must stretch over each earpiece--dexterity is required. These partially cover the drivers, like speaker grilles, and they smooth out the highs (I tried the Yuins without them, too).

Great alternative to an in ear monitor
Posted by nonsupremous from Oklahoma on 2010-05-21

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Big soundstage, solid highs, solid mids, very easy to drive
Cons: Bass

If you're like me and you have finally got sick of an IEM packing ear wax further into your ears, thus taking away from your listening enjoyment, then the PK2's are for you!

I bought these several months ago and have logged a great deal of hours since. I had always enjoyed the sound of IEM's, but the constant compaction of wax made me finally put the IEM's up for good. I went through more than a dozen cheap earbuds before I finally took a leap with these. I just didn't figure an earbud should run 80 bucks.

These earbuds have very nice highs, sparkly but not bright IMO. They don't overkill at all.
Mids are great with these also. Vocals come through strong and clear and are never overpowered by any other part of the musical spectrum.
Bass is my biggest complaint with these. While the bass is tight and certainly present, it really lags behind the rest of the sound. Sometimes that can leave your music sounding a little bit hollow. I am a person who likes bass quite a bit, so this took some time getting used to. If you happen to use a Walkman as your choice of players, I'd recommend putting your clear bass setting on +3. But it is something that I have gotten used to and overlooked because the rest of the sound is just really great.

Now to my favorite part of these little buds, The soundstage. Still to this day I am shocked at the size of the soundstage. There are times when I truly feel like I have a full size headphone on my head. I find this to be an amazing feat of workmanship considering the fact that these are an earbud. Instrument placement is good, not amazing, but really good.

Overall, I'd say if you are sick of shoving nozzles down into your ear canal and you can get past the lack of bass, do invest in the Yuin PK2. It's really been one of the best 80 dollars I have spent.

One final note. I have never measured so I'm not totally sure, but it seems to me that the earbud on the PK2 is just slightly bigger than the PK1. They fit fine, but when I wear my PK1, it just seems to fit in easier.
