Frequency Response for the Yuin PK2

Ever had your inner ear tickled raw by in ear headphones? Well, Chinese audio manufacturer Yuin's new line of earbuds have arrived to rescue iPod / Mp3 /laptop-PC listeners tired of the deeply invasive in ear headphone design. The PK-2 models occupy the mid-priced slot within their PK earbud series. Expect impressive sound quality previously unequaled in the earbud category at anywhere near the price. Thankfully, the less fastidious, easy fit of the typical earbud style remains intact but unlike other earbuds on the market, the sound quality here is easily head and shoulders above most earbuds we've heard and about equal to many mid-priced earphones. The PK-2's detailed treble range extension and its solidly balanced bass response easily outshines the cheapo earbuds found at big box stores or at the Apple shop. Don't expect too much in the way of ambient noise-blocking when compared to deep-fitting in ear headphones but if great sound--not great isolation--is your driving factor these will put a gigantically pleased smile on your nice n' comfy head.

The Yuins PK2 come with a selection of thin foam mesh earpads: 2 pairs with the hole-in-the middle style and one pair without the hole. The PK-2 features a newly redesigned 4ft long 'Y' type cable. As with the other Yuin earbuds, the PK-2 comes only in a black matte color. A grey wood-panel little gift box contains the PK-2 and all assorted goodies like a gold-plated 1/4" plug adaptor. The PK-2's 20-20,000Hz audio response matches that of nearly all earphone designs except for upscale ultra high-end earphones. The YUIN 90-Day manufacturers product warranty is serviced exclusively through Head-Direct USA in New York. And one more thing: the PK2's booklet and instructions are all in Chinese so good luck with that.

full size headphone in an earbud disguise
by plonter from israel on 2010-01-27

Pros: amazing sound,comfortable,excellent value
Cons: zero isolation
Would you recommend this product: Yes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can definitely say that the PK2 are one of the best purchases I have ever made, and probably the best in the portable zone.
I just love them so much. the sound is very audiophilic in all the spectrum...in fact, they are very much close in sound to the full sized HD650 in my honest opinion.
I generally listen to them plugged in to my portable player, and they simply sound spectacular.
I know I am maybe too excited, but they truly deserve it. I have them for 3 years and I am still amazed every time I listen to them. boy! these little things can sound like a full size headphone. I have'nt managed to find even one fault with them so far. the bass is well extended and the highs are very smooth and don't have the slightest harshness. they are truly HI-FI earphones because they represents the original recording very well.

at the beginning I was really uncomfortable with in ear earphones (shure se420,530) and was looking for a nice earbud replacement, and I found them here at headroom. I was really impressed by the review in headroom's site but I didn't expect them to be so good. they are excellent value for their price.

I can keep talking about them without end,but for everyone who is looking for a really great sound ,and don't care much about isolation, these are very recommended by me.

Excellent Earbuds, What a Pleasure
by Mrs. Mom from Seattle, WA on 2010-01-19

Pros: good quality sound, good fit
Cons: low base, short cord,
Would you recommend this product: Yes

I ordered these after reading other reviews and I'm very happy. The sound is crisp, strong mids, clear highs. I wish the base was stronger, but it's great for listening to my classical guitar music, because I hear all the licks clearly. Compared to the earduds that come with the IPOD, these make listening to my music a pleasure.

Fantastic earbuds
by Andrew from Lund, Sweden on 2010-01-18

Would you recommend this product: Yes

These earbuds are a bargain. They look like any earbud but sound better than any other I have tried.
Unpacking them is a leasure as they are placed inside two (!) very nice small, crafted wooden containers. Looks more like they would hold a valuable gem...

Exactly What I Expected
by Lamont from New York, NY on 2010-01-17

Pros: Good sq for price, comfortable, durable
Cons: Should have came with a cord extension
Would you recommend this product: Yes

I was really impressed with the PK2 as soon as I received them. The packaging is very interesting and they come with a nice tin.

Also- I ordered them after reading other reviews saying they are not very durable. However, Yuin must have changed their production or maybe those people had duds because these feel rock solid. The cable is made out of a thicker rubber (the type that doesn't easily tangle) so this is a huge plus for me. The cable is quite short (1m I belive) which is very nice when you want to plug them into an mp3 player that's in your jean or chest pocket. The one thing I think Yuin should have done is to include a extension. Not a major issue, but worth noting.

The design looks like it's straight from the 80's. Despite the bland look, I don't really consider this to be a con because once they are in your ears they are very low profile and sleek looking. Also, I'm sure they would attract less thieves than other flashier chromed-out buds. They are very comfortable. I wear them at work and forget they are on for hours at a time.

I'm no audiophile, but the sound quality is really great on these. Nice crisp bass, strong mids and clear highs. They aren't as detailed as my Grado 325i's (obviously) but still perform well considering they are sub-$100. The PK2's warm up after about 10 hours of break-in so I recommend you leave them plugged in overnight with various types of music (techno, rock, rap, classical).

Lastly, a huge benefit some don't mention is the open design of these and most other ear buds. I have a pair of in-ear Westone UM2 and the sound on those is fantastic. They easily beat the PK2 when it comes to isolation, sound quality, and especially sound stage. However, there are many times when you can't have isolation. That's why I bought the PK2. For work (when I need to hear other people talking to me), walking in the street (where I need to hear traffic around me), and riding the train (so I can hear what stop it is) these offer the clear advantage of me being able to let in the outside world.

Overall I am pleased with this purchase and would definitely recommend them to a friend. Headroom also did a great job with the shipping :)

Fantastic for when isolation isn't an option
by kbergstr from Dover, DE on 2010-01-17

Pros: Comfortable
Would you recommend this product: Yes

I bought these because in my office I can't wear isolating ear phones-- people need to be able to get a hold of me, I need to be sure I hear when the phone rings, etc.

These little buds fit the bill perfectly. While' I'm not an uber audiophile, I don't have any complaints.

Best bang for buck earbuds
by Rei Yano from Clovis, CA on 2010-01-16

Pros: nice fit, amazing value, well built, great sound
Cons: short wire
Would you recommend this product: Yes

I have been pleasantly surprised by these little guys. They sound amazing. Better than any earbud you can get over at apple and at a reasonable price. They are fairly comfy and are easy to store away in the little capsule that comes with the package. The only beef I have with this set of buds is that the wire is a tad on the short side. But not so short that it renders it unusable. Even if this posed a problem you could easily get some kind of extension cord.

Like a portable studio headphone
by Jam from Australia on 2010-01-15

Pros: Fantastic sound, excellent comfort, good value
Cons: Poor cable quality, quiet bass
Would you recommend this product: Yes

I've never expected earbud headphones to sound any good, or to reflect any sort of accuracy in terms of sound, but the Yuin PK2 come very close. I'd describe the sound as flat, dynamic and enjoyable, there doesn't seem to be anything to not like about the quality of the sound coming out of these little earbuds. Soundstage can be a bit congested at times with louder, fuller music, but other times it can be an incredibly open and surrounding, with notes seeming to float around you.

I cannot go a day of work without these things in my ears, they are the ultimate work headphone. Easy to drive, discrete and non-leaking, they're great to hook up to a portable mp3 player and experience some unexpected hi-fi audio! I also have a set of DT880, and I'd say these little headphones show about 80% the amount of detail of a full size headphone, impressive indeed.

One complaint is the flimsy plug and easily broken cable. I had to cut the cable short and replace the plug after about a year and a half of heavy use, rolling them up and storing them in a small case. Apparently you can replace the cable, but for close to $100AU, you'd want something that lasted. This alone keeps me away from the PK1.

Overall, a great earbud, essential if you want the highest quality audio on the go. The best earbud I've ever heard.
